DETAILS

VSW holds a collection of over 5000 16mm films primarily originating from public and university libraries. We highly value this rare chunk of media and cultural history on behalf of the artists and researchers who find real information and source material within. 16mm film is a true cultural capsule, a window through a kind of media produced specifically to homogenize national viewpoints, attitudes, and educational standards through the 20th century. The gulf between our capacity for media consumption now and then is striking. To participate in a 16mm screening might make you squirm in your seat. Why is this film so slow and pedantic? Why is it always telling us how to live and behave? How can we continue to enjoy a media whose cultural values we have outgrown? Our sophisticated new attention spans have gone beyond 24 frames per second, and so we can explore new ways to view it. SLUDGE takes its name from an extrasensory Tiktok fad of simultaneously showing two or more videos on one screen. SLUDGE FILM presents 16mm in a multi-channel projection performance of overlapping media. SLUDGE FILM is an evening’s experiment of mashed up titles and topics from VSW’s 16mm collection, pushing your perceptive limits, and making new meaning from old formats.
